Concerning Drinking And Driving Statistics In Canada For 2022 (Part 1 Of 3)
Unfortunately, deaths and accidents caused by drinking and driving continue to be a major public safety issue in Canada. These violent deaths cause immense pain for many families, often more than the combined number of hostage situations, armed robberies, and murders by serial killers.
The number of DUIs worldwide is alarming, and Canada is no exception. Each year, thousands of people are injured or killed in alcohol-related accidents. In order to raise awareness of this problem, we are sharing the Drinking and Driving Statistics Canada for 2022. This series covers DUI statistics worldwide as they relate to Canada.
We hope that by bringing attention to this issue, we can help make our roads safer for everyone.
1.35 Million Deaths Annually Are Caused by Impaired Driving Worldwide
Impaired driving is one of the top causes of preventable death worldwide, claiming more than 1.35 million lives annually. That’s more than homicide and suicide combined.
Despite this, impaired driving continues to be a problem on our roads. Every day, people make the choice to get behind the wheel after drinking or taking drugs. This puts not only themselves at risk, but also everyone else on the road.
We need to do better in educating people about the dangers of impaired driving and what they can do to avoid it. We also need to enforce stricter penalties for those who choose to break the law. Only then can we hope to make our roads safer for everyone.
Up to 69% of Road Deaths in Some Developing Countries Are Alcohol-Related.
World data shares that alcohol use is a major factor contributing to fatal road accidents, especially in developing countries. Drunk driving is also linked to millions of injuries and is responsible for about 188,000 annual deaths globally.
Drunk Driving Statistics Reveal That Alcohol Decreases Cognitive Efficiency And Impedes Fine Reflexes Even in Small Amounts
The findings of the World Health Organization research are clear: higher blood alcohol levels pose a serious danger. This is why most countries have set a limit on the amount of alcohol that can be present in the bloodstream. Even small amounts of alcohol, however, can have a significant impact – potentially resulting in life or death consequences.
Drug-Related Road Accidents Were Responsible For Around 40,000 Fatalities in 2013
The WHO released a statistic some time ago that is still very relevant today. It found that drug use can cause impairments in driving ability, and unfortunately, drug use is not decreasing. This is a major concern as it puts others on the road at risk.
51% of Drug-Related Road Accidents Are Amphetamine-Related
WHO Statistics show that amphetamines may result in more aggressive driving and irrational decisions, leading to more road accidents. Statistics show that opioids, cocaine, and cannabis cause the same, although in smaller percentages compared to amphetamines which are more readily available. Some people may argue that cannabis does not affect driving, but studies show that cannabis use is linked to attention issues and increased recklessness and lack of coordination.
